Email counseling allows you to work with your therapist by sending emails back and forth at a pace that suits you. It is an ideal option if other commitments make it difficult for you to plan and keep a traditional appointment. It also provides a high degree of privacy.

Email counseling works best if you feel comfortable writing your thoughts and feelings down. If you prefer to explain things in person another counseling format might suit you best.
Advantages of email counseling include that:
- it’s convenient – most people use e-mail regularly and can access their e-mail easily
- it’s flexible – you can fit counseling in around your other commitments
- it allows time for reflection – both you and your counselor have time to consider your responses and each other’s replies
- it provides a high degree of anonimity, which feels more comfortable to some clients than working face-to-face
- it is ideal for clients in remote areas of the world, where counselors may be few and far between
One e-mail counselling session works as follows:
…one email from you and one substantial reply from your counsellor/psychotherapist (he or she might also send an initial email asking for a little bit more information, especially during the first session), and then a further optional short email from you if you would like to clarify anything you and your therapist have discussed. Your therapist will reply to this email to bring the session to an end.
